An “all-out war” on usury must be waged as loan sharks increasingly prey on the poor and people engaging in public works schemes, the chairman of the National Roma Self-Government (ORO) said in a statement on Tuesday.

Florian Farkas, who is also a Fidesz lawmaker, said he had turned to Sandor Pinter, the minister of the interior whose responsibilities include public works schemes, after receiving information that loan sharks were now taking advantage of people engaged in public works. He added that it was usurers who were making gains from public works schemes, and not the public workers.

Farkas said this type of crime was seriously damaging social-inclusion programmes while at the same time forcing the vulnerable under pressure into deep poverty and potentially into illegal situations.

He welcomed steps so far taken by the prime minister and law-enforcement agencies to combat usury, but said more emphasis must be placed on efforts to thwart such practices in relation to public works.
